Rowing can be an enjoyable form of exercise, a way of seeing the land from a different perspective, a nice social outing, a tooth and nail competition or something to do when there is not enough wind for sailing. No great knowledge is required and it is suitable for all ages from about 8 years upwards. We have three boats which are specifically for rowing and a number of others provide auxilliary propulsion.
Our main rowing boat is the St Ayles skiff 'Grace'. It is 22ft long and takes a crew of five - four rowing and one steering. Most of our rowing, so far, has been in the sheltered waters of Port Rae, but 'Grace' is well capable of going to sea when the weather is suitable. St Ayles skiffs were designed for coastal rowing, a sport which started in Fife and has spread to costal communities across Scotland and other parts of the world.
Our rowing sessions, so far have been about the time of high water on Sunday mornings/afternoons. That day was chosen because it suited most of the participants at the time but other days are possible, if there is a crew who want to make use of the boat. Sessions are relaxed and informal but there is the possibility of being more competetive. There are races at the Portsoy Boat Festival and there are also World Championships for the more ambitious.
We are looking for people - individuals or groups - who would like to take part in a convivial, nature friendly, outdoor pursuit. Would it be suitable for you? You won't know until you try.
